Viktória
Kovács:
We
interview the Schenkel family in their house. The Schenkels come from Germany.
What is your name?
R.S.:
My name is Rudolf Schenkel.
K.S.:
My name is Karin Schenkel.
K.V.:
How old are you?
R.S.:
I am fifty-nine years old.
K.S.:
I am a little older, sixty years old.
B.D.:
What was the purpose of your coming to Hungary?
R.S.:
I came to Hungary with my wife because we wanted to realize our dreams. We
wanted to sail and make our life more beautiful in our declining years.
B.D.:
Why have you left your homeland?
R.S.:
I come from a densely populated area. I did not like the crowded area.
K.S.:
Here the life is quiet. The air is better than in our country, there is no rush
and scramble. Our area in Germany is similar to Budapest. Budapest is also more
crowded than this region.
B.D.:
What kind of problems occurred?
K.S.:
We did not have any problems. We wanted to sail and enjoy our leisure time.
K.V.:
Where did you come from to Hungary?
R.S.:
We came from Wiesbaden. I was born in Baden-Württemberg in Heilbronn.
K.A.:
How did you come into Somogy County?
R.S.:
It was our free intention. Four years ago we decided to go abroad. We considered
the lake Balaton, too, among the other possibilities. And we came here.
K.S.:
We could say that we came here because a sailing fellow suggested it.
First
we tried to find a house on the north shore of Balaton but we could not find a
suitable one. After that the south shore was recommended to us. One of our
sailing partners helped us to look around and finally we chose this house.
K.A.:
Did you come here alone or with the family?
R.S.:
We came here together like a family.
K.A.:
What do you like in your new residence?
R.S.:
For me it is very important how to spend the leisure time in Hungary, because of
the lake Balaton. I can sail here. I can make a lot of things here more freely
than in Germany. For me the leisure time is the determinant.
K.S.:
And the climate. Here the summer is much longer than in Germany. The climate is
not so variable but much better than in my country.
K.K.:
What do you miss mostly?
K.S.:
I miss especially my family.
R.S.:
This is her opinion. I miss nothing.
K.S.:
And when we miss something we can visit to Germany at any time. We keep our
apartment in Wiesbaden. We maintain our roots in Germany and nothing keeps us on
a definite place. We have the connection with Germany. Our children and
grandchildren live there.
K.K.:
Do you regret that you left your country?
R.S.:
Basically not. Of course, I have some reservations. There were some problems
because of burglary. My car was stolen. Later it was found in Belgium but I was
not able to bring it here. But I do not regret I have come here.
K.S.:
There are moments when I have doubts if we made a good decision or not. But it
is usual in any country. There are both good and bad things everywhere.
K.K:
Thank you for the interview.
R.S.:
Thank you for the questions and the visit.
